Tooth Extraction

At Tooth Matters, we offer safe and efficient tooth extraction services when a tooth cannot be preserved. Our skilled dental team ensures a smooth and comfortable extraction process, focusing on minimizing discomfort and promoting a quick recovery.

When Is Tooth Extraction Recommended?

Tooth extraction may be necessary when a tooth is beyond repair due to:

  • Severe tooth decay that cannot be restored with a filling or crown.
  • Advanced gum disease that has compromised the support around the tooth.
  • Tooth fractures or damage that extend below the gum line.
  • Impacted teeth that are blocked from properly emerging (common with wisdom teeth).
  • Overcrowded teeth, often to prepare for orthodontic treatment or to make space in the jaw.

Types of Tooth Extraction:

At Tooth Matters, we provide two main types of tooth extraction, depending on your specific needs:

  1. Routine Extraction:
    • For teeth that are visible and accessible in the mouth, a routine extraction can be performed. This procedure involves loosening the tooth with specialized tools and gently removing it from the socket. Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area, ensuring a comfortable experience.
  2. Surgical Extraction:
    • For teeth that are impacted or have not fully erupted (such as wisdom teeth), a surgical extraction is required. This procedure may involve making a small incision in the gum and, in some cases, removing a portion of the bone to fully access the tooth. Like simple extractions, local anesthesia is used to ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure.

How Is a Tooth Extraction Performed?

  1. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is applied to numb the tooth and surrounding area to ensure a pain-free experience.
  2. Extraction Process: For a routine extraction, the dentist loosens the tooth with an instrument called an elevator and removes it with forceps. For a surgical extraction, the dentist may need to make a small incision to access the tooth.
  3. Stitches (if necessary): In some cases, stitches may be required to close the gum, especially after a surgical extraction.
  4. Post-Extraction Care Instructions: After the procedure, the dentist will provide you with detailed instructions to promote healing, reduce discomfort, and prevent complications such as dry socket.

Post-Extraction Care:

Proper care after a tooth extraction is essential for promoting healing and preventing complications. Here are some tips to follow:

  • Apply pressure to the extraction site using gauze to control bleeding.
  • Avoid rinsing for the first 24 hours to allow a blood clot to form.
  • Eat soft foods for a few days, avoiding hard or sticky foods.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking through a straw, as the suction can dislodge the clot and cause a painful condition called dry socket.
  • Take prescribed painkillers and follow any other instructions provided by your dentist to ensure a smooth recovery.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

Most tooth extractions are completed within 30 to 60 minutes depending on the complexity of the case. Surgical extractions may take longer, particularly if the tooth is impacted or in a difficult-to-reach position.
