When Is Wisdom Tooth Surgery Recommended?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, often cause problems for individuals whose jaws do not have enough space to accommodate them. When a wisdom tooth fails to fully emerge or is obstructed by adjacent teeth, it becomes impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to several oral health issues, such as:

  • Pressure and discomfort at the back of the jaw.
  • Gum disease due to trapped food debris around the partially erupted tooth.
  • Tooth decay on the impacted tooth or adjacent teeth.
  • Infections and swelling in the gum tissue.

If you experience these symptoms, wisdom tooth surgery may be recommended to prevent further complications and maintain your oral health.

How Is Wisdom Tooth Removed?

Wisdom tooth removal is a surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience. Here’s how the process works:

  1. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area around the wisdom tooth, ensuring you do not feel any pain during the procedure.
  2. Accessing the Tooth: The dentist makes a small incision in the gum to access the impacted tooth. In most cases, a small portion of the bone around the tooth may need to be removed.
  3. Tooth Removal: If the tooth is difficult to extract in one piece, it may be divided into smaller sections for easier removal. Once the tooth is fully removed, the area is cleaned to ensure there are no remaining debris.
  4. Closing the Site: After the tooth is removed, the gum is stitched back into place. The stitches will dissolve on their own or be removed by the dentist after 1-2 weeks, depending on the type used.

Post-Extraction Care

After the procedure, once the anesthesia wears off, you may experience some discomfort and swelling. Your dentist will provide painkillers to manage discomfort and may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.

  • Swelling and bruising may last for 3 to 5 days, and you might experience jaw stiffness during this time.
  • Follow-up care: Your dentist will schedule a follow-up visit to check the healing process and, if needed, remove the stitches approximately 1-2 weeks after the surgery.

Recovery Tips:

To promote faster healing and minimize discomfort after the procedure, we recommend:

  • Applying an ice pack to reduce swelling.
  • Eating soft foods and avoiding hard, chewy, or hot foods for a few days.
  • Avoiding strenuous activities and smoking, as these can delay healing.
  • Keeping your mouth clean by gently rinsing with mouthwash or saltwater (after the first 24 hours*)
